Requirements to Remain in Good Standing
- Attending 1 of the 2 retreats each academic year;
- Attending 1 of the 2 Symposia each academic year (for ½ of event);
- Attending the annual Honors Ball;
- Meeting with an Academic Advisor once each academic year. During the student’s first year, he/she will use this meeting to create a Plan of Study before registering for spring classes. During second, third, and fourth years of study, the student will use these meetings to follow up and ensure that the Plan of Study is still applicable for the student.
- Participating in 1 volunteer project per semester, which is encouraged to be done with other Honors students. This must be in the local community, giving back to an educational or non-profit organization. Any event that the student is not paid to participate in counts. All events must be logged via OrgSync, with the date, time, and location of the event, as well as the hours spent volunteering, and a reference to confirm participation. These logged events may be approved or denied by a committee. If a student feels that the hours spent at an event do not properly reflect upon their engagement, they may petition for credit for extra hours. Students with exceptional volunteer experience during the academic year may receive recognition at the annual Honors Ball.
- Attending 1 professional development event per semester. Travelling to a conference, attending a workshop, attending a career fair, or attending a distinguished speaking event are some examples of an academic event. Any event that contributes to a student’s professional development is acceptable. All events must be logged via OrgSync, with the date, time, and location of the event, as well as a reference to confirm participation. These logged events may be approved or denied by a committee.
- Attending 1 student engagement activity per semester. The following is a non-inclusive list of student engagement activities: tutoring other students, holding an office in a student organization, joining/being a member of a fraternity or sorority, participating in sports teams (including recreational), and participating in group study events. Any event that requires engagement with other students is acceptable. Students are encouraged to organize their own events with other Honors students, such as a book club or film event. All events must be logged via OrgSync, with the date, time, and location of the event, as well as a reference to confirm participation. These logged events may be approved or denied by a committee.
- Attending 1 faculty engagement activity per semester. The Honors Program will host two “Faculty-Student Mixers” each semester. Students are encouraged to invite at least one professor and/or faculty mentor to these events. Student attendance will be logged by signing in at the event. Students may also arrange their own events with faculty. Such events will be logged on OrgSync, with the time and date of the event, as well as a reference to the participating faculty to confirm participation. Participating faculty may receive recognition at the annual Honors Ball.
- Absences:
- If a student has to miss events listed in 1-3, he/she should notify the Director immediately. Absences are excused at the Director’s discretion. If the Director has not been contacted regarding an absence, it is automatically counted as an unexcused absence.
- The events listed in 4 are required events with no alternative event that may satisfy its requirement.
- If a student finds that events listed 5-8 are negatively impacting his/her self-efficacy, sense of belonging, or perceptions of curriculum, they must explain in writing why this is the case, and present this writing to the Director. The Director may or may not decide to excuse the student of the event requirements. The Director may also opt to meet with the student to create an alternative to satisfy the event requirements.
